GROWING UP ON THE WATER - A FISHING LEGACY

I’ve been fishing all my life, growing up in Taranaki and commercial long line fishing with Dad from a very young age.  Whenever we got a chance, we were fishing, we spent lots of time chasing marlin and tuna too, gaining heaps of experience over the years and catching many striped marlin, yellowfin and bluefin tuna.

When we weren’t out on the boat I was fishing in the harbour, on the wharf, surfcasting off the beach or ledges or scrambling around rock pools.  If it was on or near the water, I was into it.

My brother and I ran Dads smaller 18’ commercial boat after school or weekends or if we weren’t out with Dad on the big boat.  We mainly chased snapper and our snapper were sent to Japan for the export iki-jime market.  We focused on quality; where we got a better price for the best condition fish and fish would be rejected if they were not of the highest standard, so this commitment to landing high quality fish is important to me and something I still strongly advocate.

With my passion for the sea, I went to Otago University to study marine science.  Six years later I gained three degrees, including a Masters Degree in Marine Science, hence the strong focus on technical and science related posts on my social media platforms.

After University, I sat my commercial skipper’s ticket and I now have 23 years of professional experience in the marine environment.  I currently work as an environmental consultant, focusing on the nearshore and offshore marine environments.

With the fishing I do these days, I am very fortunate to work with some great companies showcasing the latest gear and technology, from boats, motors, electronics, rods, reels to safety gear and terminal tackle.  I endeavor to show how that equipment can be used to catch fish and make boating in general more enjoyable and safer.

It is this experience I have gained from many years on the water and lots of fishing trips to bring together a select number of items on this website that I personally use for my fishing, either to improve the success for catching the fish or to better look after the fish once they are caught.

"To me it is not always about catching the biggest fish, but more about how I caught it, what gear and bait I used and how to look after it to get the best quality fish possible."

I received many questions about what gear I use and where to get it from.  This led to the development of this website providing you with one place to get the specialised equipment that I use, with the goal of improving your fishing success and the quality of your catch.
